Saturday was a big day for both sides but even bigger for the DIII side as they would battle in the MRFU Playoffs and a chance to go to Westerns.
The Bombers would face against the Hornets in the first round of the MRFU playoffs and after losing to them 2 weeks before the Bombers were itching for a rematch. The Hornets started off quick scoring two tries and the Bombers playing on their heels. The Bombers were finally starting to get their footing and were slowly working their way back on the score board, but the Hornets were holding the lead 18-10 at half.
The Bombers kicked off the second half with the wind at their backs and kept the ball in the Hornets end. After an interception and try scored, the Hornets continued to extend their lead, but the Bombers never gave up. After battling back and forth the Bombers were able to tie the game 30-30 with a heads up play by Bryan Hebron with 5 minutes left in the game. After the kick off and kick chase into the Hornets zone the Bombers knocked on which resulted in a scrum to the Hornets. The Hornets were quick to get the ball from one side of the field to the other but the Bombers defense stayed right along with them and lead to a turn over ruck and Bombers ball.
The Hornets would committed a high tackle penalty and gave the Bombers a penalty kick with no time left of the clock. Jim Morrison would setup along the side line, 40 meters from the closet post with a tied game, no time left, and the wind at his back; it’s what most players dream of when the game is on the line and it comes down to you. Jim’s kick started off high with a slight pull and would split the uprights giving the Bomber’s the win 33-30 over the Hornets.
Despite winning the game, the Bombers DIII side had to forfeit the game against the Hornets due to a roster protest. The run to Westerns for the DIII side has come to an end but not playing rugby. The DII side won their game against KCRFC 36-12 is still going to Westerns at the end of April, but both sides still have games to be played before that time. This weekend the Bombers will take on Palmer in a friendly match at Lucier Park. Kickoff is at 1pm and all players will get playing time. Ruggerfest, always a good time, is the following weekend so mark your calendars.
