They say to be the best you have to beat the best and Saturday was going to a good test of that. Palmer, a DI and usually a final four Rugby team, traveled down to St. Louis to take on the Bombers in a friendly match.
The game was going to be a very physical match with a lot of speed and talent. Both teams controlled the ball very well and were one play away from a big break away, but the defenses’ were strong in shutting down the run. The Bombers were finally able to break through with a big run form Alex Ochoa that lead to a try scored by Ryan Hanify. Ryan McDonald would score a second try a few minutes later as the Bomber’s would lead 12-0 at half.
In the second half Palmer would start taking more control of the ball as the Bombers would make substitutions. Palmer was able to get the ball out quickly and the Bomber’s defense was running out of steam and getting beat on the outsides. Palmer would go on a 22-0 run in the second half and beat the Bombers 22-12. Despite the lost it was a great match and a better test for the Bombers before heading to Westerns.
Man of the match for the forwards was Mike Kellett, a DeSmet Senior, who was selected to the U-18 team and wins body slam of the year. Bryan Hebron was man of the match for the backs as the scrummy.
This Saturday is Ruggerfest at Creve Coeur Park. If you’ve never been to Ruggerfest I’d suggest coming out to watch teams from around the Mid-West competing in the two day tournament. The Bombers will be entering one active-side and an Old-Boys team.
The weather is looking to be really nice for the weekend so come on out and watch rugby all day. We will post times when they become available so make sure to check out Facebook page.
Don’t forget to get your teams together for the Bomber’s Trivia Night on April 20th. Register Online.
