With only a few weeks remaining every game and every point is critical to better one’s position come playoffs.
After last weeks DIII cancellation and DII’s win over KCRFC in the “snow bowl of 2017” the Bomber’s DIII side was ready to get back to the pitch.
Resuming league play the Bomber’s DIII side would travel to Belleville to take on the Rowdies at Jaycee Fields.
Opening up the game the Bombers were able to control the ball in the first half against a strong steady wind. Line outs and scrums were strong but line breaks followed support seemed the to the big factor in this match. The Bombers were able to move the ball well and put up 27 unanswered points at half.
Bombers vs Rowdies Livestream
The second half started off strong with a try by Mark Menne at the 46th minute mark but things seemed to shift as the Bombers found themselves playing more in their end than the first half. The Bombers would put up another try around the 50th minute mark but gave up two tries to the Rowdies at the 70th & 79th minute. With the final score 39-12 the Bombers were able to acquire much needed bonus points but will still need more bonus points to better position themselves for playoffs. Tries were scored by Mark Menne(2) along with conversions, Joshuah Pinsonn, Jerry Iosefo, Joe McDonald, Mike McGowan, and Kyle Manley. The next and last league match for the DIII side will be against the Royals on April 8th at Lucier Park.
Speaking of the Lucier Park the Bomber’s DII hosted the 2013 DII National Champion and multi final four appearances Wisconsin in a friendly match. To be the best you’ve got to play the best and for the Bombers to get to that next level Wisconsin was a perfect opportunity to test the waters.
Both sides had a lot of great talent and experience which made for a very tough and exciting match to watch.
The Bombers were first to score with a try by Sean McDonald, a conversion by Keegan Mills who would also kick a PK and put the Bombers up 10-0 over Wisconsin. Wisconsin was able to score two tries before half but missed both conversion with the score 10-10 at half.
The speed and rucking were exceptional but the Bombers struggled with some open field tackling and injuries early on in the match.
Wisconsin attempted to perform the Italian defence (Italy vs Wales) by not creating a ruck but Henry McClelland picked up on it which lead to a try by George Sullivan and conversion by Keegan Mills.
It was a hard fought match on both sides and overall just a great game of rugby. With one more PK from Keegan and shutting out Wisconsin in the second half the Bombers got the win with the final score 22-10.
This weekend the 1st place Frontier League DII Bombers look to stay undefeated when the KC Blues come to visit. Afterward the Bombers will be having their annual Own the Bar hosted at Colombos Cafe & Tavern. The club will receive a portion of all sales throughout the night to help cover costs such as gear and travel for the playoffs. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and other games throughout the night. It’s always a fun time and a great way to meet the team.
