This season has taken the Bombers to every extreme weather condition and this past weekend at the Milwaukee Barbarians proved to be no different.
With a starting temperature of an extremely high 28°F (that’s -2.2C to you funny talkers) the Bombers kicked off their last road game in Milwaukee. The Barbarians, feeling right at home in the icy conditions, started strong and controlled the ball often, while the boys in black struggled to hold on to the snow covered ball and multiple penalties set them back. Luckily the forwards, as they have done much of the season, started to find their stride 20-30 minutes in and drove Milwaukee’s scrum back to open up the defense and Bombers scored their first try shortly before half.
Continuing their scrum dominance into the second half led to multiple breaks as the Bombers clawed their way back from a slow and frozen start. Thanks to a lucky break the Bombers recovered the ball as the 80th minute ticked by. After a handful of extremely tense and line-breaking phases led by off-the bench players, the bombers swung from one sideline to the other for captain Dave Klug to once again steal the glory and seal the victory 22-21.
The sentiment was clear on the sidelines: the victory was not due to the starting 15 alone. It was all the players who made the trip. The ones who came off the bench and made a huge impact, the ones who traveled but did not see any playing time, and the ones who came to practice to help the team but couldn’t make the trip. It was the coaches who have dedicated countless nights to helping the team get better. The board who helped secure a solid bus and hotel. And lastly due to the alumni and fans who made the trip with the team.
Braving the cold to simply cheer on the Bombers in a match far away, or helping record games and take photos so the team has film to work with and pictures to help remember it all by. It was all of you reading and supporting us through this first year in this new league and we can’t thank you enough. The Bombers are potentially 1 win away from taking second place in their inaugural year, which could carry playoff potential.
So get out your winter jacket, leave your cooler outside for some free ice by mother nature Thursday, and come out to cheer on the Bombers one last time this Saturday as they strive to once more #PaintitBlack
