Bombers vs. Palmer

They say to be the best you have to beat the best and Saturday was going to a good test of that. Palmer, a DI and usually a final four Rugby team, traveled down to St. Louis to take on the Bombers in a friendly match.

The game was going to be a very physical match with a lot of speed and talent. Both teams controlled the ball very well and were one play away from a big break away, but the defenses’ were strong in shutting down the run. The Bombers were finally able to break through with a big run form Alex Ochoa that lead to a try scored by Ryan Hanify. Ryan McDonald would score a second try a few minutes later as the Bomber’s would lead 12-0 at half.

In the second half Palmer would start taking more control of the ball as the Bombers would make substitutions.  Palmer was able to get the ball out quickly and the Bomber’s defense was running out of steam and getting beat on the outsides. Palmer would go on a 22-0 run in the second half and beat the Bombers 22-12. Despite the lost it was a great match and a better test for the Bombers before heading to Westerns.

This Saturday is Ruggerfest at Creve Coeur Park. If you’ve never been to Ruggerfest I’d suggest coming out to watch teams from around the Mid-West competing in the two day tournament. The Bombers will be entering one active-side and an Old-Boys team.

The weather is looking to be really nice for the weekend so come on out and watch rugby all day. We will post times when they become available so make sure to check out Facebook page.

Don’t forget to get your teams together for the Bomber’s Trivia Night on April 20th. Register Online.

It's Never Easy

Saturday was a big day for both sides but even bigger for the DIII side as they would battle in the MRFU Playoffs and a chance to go to Westerns.

The Bombers would face against the Hornets in the first round of the MRFU playoffs and after losing to them 2 weeks before the Bombers were itching for a rematch. The Hornets started off quick scoring two tries and the Bombers playing on their heels. The Bombers were finally starting to get their footing and were slowly working their way back on the score board, but the Hornets were holding the lead 18-10 at half.

The Bombers kicked off the second half with the wind at their backs and kept the ball in the Hornets end. After an interception and try scored, the Hornets continued to extend their lead, but the Bombers never gave up. After battling back and forth the Bombers were able to tie the game 30-30 with a heads up play by Bryan Hebron with 5 minutes left in the game. After the kick off and kick chase into the Hornets zone the Bombers knocked on which resulted in a scrum to the Hornets. The Hornets were quick to get the ball from one side of the field to the other but the Bombers defense stayed right along with them and lead to a turn over ruck and Bombers ball.

The Hornets would committed a high tackle penalty and gave the Bombers a penalty kick with no time left of the clock. Jim Morrison would setup along the side line, 40 meters from the closet post with a tied game, no time left, and the wind at his back; it’s what most players dream of when the game is on the line and it comes down to you. Jim’s kick started off high with a slight pull and would split the uprights giving the Bomber’s the win 33-30 over the Hornets.

Despite winning the game, the Bombers DIII side had to forfeit the game against the Hornets due to a roster protest. The run to Westerns for the DIII side has come to an end but not playing rugby. The DII side won their game against KCRFC 36-12 is still going to Westerns at the end of April, but both sides still have games to be played before that time. This weekend the Bombers will take on Palmer in a friendly match at Lucier Park. Kickoff is at 1pm and all players will get playing time. Ruggerfest, always a good time,  is the following weekend so mark your calendars.

Bombers Show Heart

Playing away is never easy and St. Paddy’s weekend would be a big challenge as the DII side would face an always tough Tulsa team in Tulsa.

The weather was warm with temps in the 70’s, a few clouds, and some wind at kick-off. The Bomber’s took quick advantage of the ball as James Sills kicked a penalty kick in the first 7 minutes of play to give the Bombers an early lead. Both teams were eager to get the next points, but both defenses’ were determined to stop any offence. Deep in the Bomber’s zone Mark Menne found an opening and had a 40 meter run with James Sills and Sean McDonald in support, which lead to a try scored by Sean. James would miss the conversion but the Bombers were ahead of Tulsa 8-0. Tulsa kept the pressure up and was quick to cut the score down to one point with a try and conversion before half making it 8-7 at half.

The second half started off with the same intensity, but the Bombers had the wind at their backs this time. The Bombers with a line-out deep in Tulsa’s zone and were able to drive it for a try scored by Chris ‘Vinny’ Wroughton (video below). The conversion was good by James and gave the Bombers a 15-7 lead over Tulsa. Things quickly changed direction as Tulsa was right on the Bomber’s 5 meter line, hungry for a try. Tulsa would swing the ball from one end to the other, but the Bombers were right there with them and held Tulsa out of the zone in some of the best defense played. “Our defensive during the game but in particular the five minutes we spent on our line was simply outstanding.” said Aaron Spencer. “… it was the best I have seen out of the Bombers for a very long time.” James Sills’ big leg and with help from the wind would get the ball out of the Bombers end. William ‘Ryan’ McDonald would find an opening and score from 35 meters out, extending the lead 22-7 with James’ conversion. Tulsa was only able to get three points out of the second half with a penalty kick before Matt Skarin would score the final try of the game and giving the Bombers a 27-10 victory over Tulsa.

Both teams played exceptional rugby and defense was the name of the game. Man of the match for the backs was Mark Menne and Chris ‘Vinny’ Wroughton for the forwards. A little rain in the morning turning into clear skies full of sun and warmth made for a great day of rugby. Saturday was a big day for both sides as they opened up their League play against two very tough teams on our home field.

The DII side faced off against the Omaha GOATS with both teams going back and forth with kick chases. Both defenses played very strong but it was the Bombers to strike first with a try in the far corner. The score went back and forth as the GOATS took the lead in the second half. Off a line out deep in Omaha’s end, the Bombers drove and mauled the ball closer to the try zone. With less than two minutes left in the game the Bombers were able to score the winning try and beat Omaha 17-13 in one of the toughest game played.

vinny-kloc-omahaThe Bomber’s DIII side also had their first League game against the Hornets at our home field. The Bomber’s played strong defense keeping the Hornets out of the try zone, but gave up penalty kicks. Both were on the penalty kick craze but the Bombers kept the lead into the second half. The Hornets did not score a try until late in the second half and scored another quick try from the kick-off. The Bombers worked their way back into the Hornets zone but were unable to score as time expired and lost 21-16.

The DIII side has a make up game against Franklin County this Tuesday in Washington, MO at 7PM.  The DII will be traveling down to Tulsa next Saturday to take on Tulsa in another big League match.
